DEFEND POPULAR DEMOCRACY IN CENTRAL AMERICA!

Join CISPES to accompany the Salvadoran municipal and legislative elections in 2018!

These elections will be decisive to the future of social and economic transformation in El Salvador, either granting the left a stronger popular mandate to carry out deeper, structural changes in the country or reconsolidating the oligarchy’s power and rolling back the clock on the progress that has been made.

In recent years, the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court has drastically changed the country’s electoral law, unravelling many of the reforms established through the 1992 Peace Accords, and stacked the independent electoral authority with right-wing representatives. Given the high stakes of these elections, successful right-wing destabilization efforts elsewhere in Latin America, and the Supreme Court’s threats to the electoral system, international accompaniment will be critical.

The popular social movement will be on alert to fight voter disenfranchisement and ensure a fair process - and they are calling on international accompaniment to join them.

Before the elections the delegation will have the opportunity learn about the current reality in El Salvador by meeting with social movement leaders (unions, women's organizations etc), hearing from government officials and visiting some of the projects that are changing the lives of the poor and working class.
