STOP THE SUITS! STOP CAFTA!
The people of Cabañas, El Salvador stopped Pacific Rim Mining Corporation from opening two gold mines in their communities and poisoning the country’s main water source, the Lempa River.
But now Pacific Rim is using the U.S. - Central American Free Trade Agreement to sue the Salvadoran government for hundreds of millions of dollars in alleged ‘lost profits.’ Pacific Rim's refusal to acknowledge and comply with the will of the people, by dropping the lawsuit and leaving El Salvador at once, has resulted in the assassination of four anti-mining activists. Residents tell us that violence like this didn't exist before Pacific Rim arrived on the scene and began digging for gold.
On May 31, the ICSID (International Center for Settlement of Investments Disputes) of the World Bank will decide whether to let Pacific Rim's case move forward. Stand up against corporate extortion, neo-colonialism and environmental destruction in Latin America!

Acompañar a CISPES para el día de acción internacional contra minería y libre comercio en El Salvador - 27 de Mayo, 2010
Organizaciones comunitarias en Cabañas El Salvador han detenido los intentos de la empresa Pacific Rim de explotar oro, un proceso que contaminará la Río Lempa, fuente principal del agua en el país.
Pero ahora, Pacific Rim se aprovecha del tratado de libre comercio entre los EE.UU. y Centroamérica (TLC) para demandar al estado salvadoreño por cientos de millones de dólares. Mientras Pacific Rim niega de reconocer y cumplir con las decisiones del pueblo – que la empresa quite su demanda y se vaya de El Salvador – su presencia contribuye a la división comunitaria y a la violencia que sufre la gente en Cabañas, incluso los asesinatos de tres líderes comunitarias. Esos problemas no existían antes de la llegada de Pacific Rim en El Salvador.
El 31 de mayo, Centro Internacional para la Resolución de Disputas de Inversiones (ICSID por sus siglas en inglés) del Banco Mundial decidirá el futuro de la demanda de Pacific Rim.

IT’S TIME TO CHANGE THE ROOT CAUSES OF FORCED MIGRATION: NO MORE UNJUST TRADE AGREEMENTS! STOP ECONOMIC EXPLOITATION!

FACT: In the first eight years of NAFTA (the North American Free Trade Agreement), the annual number of immigrants from Mexico increased by more than 61 percent (read more at: globalexchange.org).
FACT: 2/3 of Mexican people living in the US have come after the passage of NAFTA (read more at: witnessforpeace.org).
Unjust “free” trade agreements like NAFTA and CAFTA are a root cause of immigration the United States. These trade agreements give North American corporations the “right” to exploit the land, natural resources and people of Mexico and Central America. For example, small farmers are forced off their land because they cannot compete with massive amount of federally-subsidized U.S. corn that is dumped on their markets. With no way to make a living, hundreds of people are forced to leave their homes and families every day to make the treacherous journey to the U.S.
The unfair trade policies of the U.S. government cannot be ignored in the fight for immigration reform. Justice for immigrants starts with the right of every person to live and work with dignity, including in their home countries.
You can help us out by coming to a sign making party on October 11th at 2 pm 1114 Girard Ave NW. Bring some poster board and markers if you have extras!
October 12th is International Trade Action Day and Indigenous Peoples Day!
We will be organizing a simple street theatre to call attention to the failed NAFTA model and how it forces people to migrate. This will be an educational event accompanied by outreach to get passers-by to send postcards and sign petitions demanding a just trade model! Make the connection between the failed "free" trade model and forced migration by joining CISPES, Witness for Peace, Alliance for Global Justice, and others as part of the Trade Justice Bloc at the Immigration Rights Rally. The rally starts at 3:00 pm on the West Lawn of the Capitol Building, E. Capitol Circle and Maryland Avenue SW (Capitol South Metro Station). The Trade Justice Bloc will be meeting at the Spirit of Justice Park at 2:30.

HECHO: En los primeros ocho años del NAFTA (el Tratado de Libre Comercio Norteamericana), el número de inmigrantes que vienen de México se subió por mas de 61% por falta de trabajo y comida. (Lea más: globalexchange.org).
HECHO: 2/3 de la gente Mexicana viviendo en los EE.UU. han venido después de la aprobación del NAFTA (Lea más: witnessforpeace.org).
Tratados de “libre” comercio injustos como el NAFTA y el CAFTA son una causa fundamental de inmigración a los EE.UU. Estos tratados dan a corporaciones norteamericanos el “derecho” de explotar la tierra, los recursos naturales y los pueblos de México y Centroamérica. Por ejemplo, los campesinos están forzados afuera de sus tierras por que no pueden competir con la cantidad enorme de maíz estadounidense que inunda sus mercados pequeños. Sin manera de sobrevivir, cientos de personas están forzadas dejar sus hogares y familias para hacer un viaje peligroso a los EE.UU.
No se puede evitar las políticas de comercio injustas de los EE.UU. en la lucha para una reforma migratoria justa y humana. Para ganar justicia para los y las inmigrantes, los países del las Américas tienen que respetar el derecho de cada persona para vivir y trabajar con dignidad, incluso en sus países de orígen.

El 12 de Octubre es el Día Internacional de Acción en Contra de los TLCs y el Día de los Pueblos Indígenas!
Vamos a organizar un teatro de calle simple para llamar la atención al modelo fracasado de NAFTA y CAFTA y como fuerzan a la gente a migrar. Será un evento educativo para hacer alcance en las calles para que la gente firmen postales al Presidente Obama para exigir un modelo justo de comercio internacional! Salvador at a brown bag lunch with Audelia Lopez, a
coordinating member of the women’s secretariat for El
Salvador’s leftist-social movement party, the
FMLN.
Audelia and
the National Women’s Secretariat were instrumental in the popular organization
that brought about the March 15th historic victory of President
Mauricio Funes and Vice-president Salvador Sanchez Ceren as the first leftist
president and vice-president in the history of El
Salvador.

is a critical time for the immigrant community. For years, raids and
deportations have divided families and terrorized workers. Last fall's
election marked a sea change in U.S. politics. Now, President Obama has
restated his commitment to immigration reform. We march to make this
change a reality--to bring the voices of immigrants into the national
debate over what kind of reform we need. Just and humane immigration
reform must be a central component of economic recovery. Immigrants are
workers who produce tremendous wealth in our society and deserve to be
treated with dignity and respect. Please join us on May 1st to say that
now is the time to stop the raids and deportations and move towards an
inclusive legalization of immigrant workers and families.
