{mp3}alexis_inauguration{/mp3} from http://vensol.blogspot.com/2009/06/new-salvadoran-president-straight.html Alexis was one of those of the CISPES delegation to see the first 'leftist' President of El Salvador take the Presidential sash after a clearly won electoral victory over the 20 year right wing corrupt regime. It was a regime, closely allied with the US Republican Party, that was founded by the author of the notorious Death Squads of the 1970s and 1980s.
The FMLN has shown a patience and tolerance above and beyond the call of duty to demonstrate its commitment as a truly democratic party to serve the people. These were people who were its base, and support during a 12 year 'civil war'.
The presence of virtually all the dignitaries of Latin America, as well as US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was a tribute to that expression of popular support. Probably not much said in the mainstream 'anglo media', but to Salvadorans, and Latin America in general it was a 'date with history'.
The Americas are changing, and Alexis gives us an eyewitness account of the significance of this event in San Salvador. Not only for the dignitaries, but for the people who came to the stadium to support this initiative for a long awaited change.
Musical bands who were for many years 'illegal' arrived to pay a Latin American tribute to this 'date with history', when the popular new President arrived to address his supporters at the stadium, before the formal cocktail parties of the evening with foreign dignatories. |

Critical Resistance 10 Panel Discussion: "Cross-Border Resistance to State Terrorism" |
|
|
|
|
Thursday, 16 de October de 2008 |
|
from: http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2008/10/10/18544031.php
Edited panel discussion with: Yeni Solis,
CISPES, native Salvadoran living in San Francisco w/ Alexis Stoumbelis of CISPES
for translation and as moderator; Kiilu Nyasha, former Black
Panther, current activist and radio broadcaster; and Wilson Riles, with
the Black Alliance for Just Immigration. (45 minutes)
The discussion centers around current policing
tactics which have evolved as a result of globilization. Alexis poses
two questions for the panel. How have policing tactics changed as a
result of the globalized economy? and, What do we do to organize an
effective resistence within the context of these current conditions?
Yeni speaks articulately about current police tactics in El Salvador
which closely resemble (and are imported from) U.S. policing -
militarization of the police force since the Peace Accords, repressive
and often violent tactics against the population in the name of wars on
youth gangs, drugs, and other perceived youth violence which, in
reality, have nothing to do with these issues. U.S. and Salvadoran
activists are organizing a response to monitor the early 2009
presidential elections between the incumbant right-wing Arena Party
President and a leftist FMLN challenger, including potential U.S.
interference.
Kiilu frames problems of globalization with
history from her late 60's Black Panther involvement, including
organizing in New Haven, CT during early 70's unrest in the black
community over issues of poverty and police violence. Wilson speaks in
historical terms about the need for the U.S. black community to take a
pro-immigration stance in order to link to other oppressed peoples in
the current political struggles. He discusses newer decentralized
activist tactics at the "Battle of Seattle". Both speak about getting
beyond the highly programmed racial divisions in the country to form a
cross-border resistence movement.
