Just months before he was murdered on March 24, 1980, Salvadoran Archbishop Romero wrote a letter to President Carter, calling on him to “forbid that military aid be given to the Salvadoran Government ... and to guarantee that your Government will not intervene directly or indirectly, with military, economic, diplomatic or other pressure, in determining the destiny of the Salvadoran people.”
Let's echo Romero's call to end U.S. military aid and training!
After the Bukele government suspended constitutional rights in March 2022, over 70,000 people have been arrested without warrants. Human rights organizations have documented thousands of cases of abuse at the hands of military and police, including the death of over 150 people while in prison, some showing signs of torture.
The January arrests of five anti-mining activists in Santa Marta, El Salvador is a telling example of the Bukele regime's attacks on the grassroots opposition movement that is led by students, unions and environmental defenders.
And yet, U.S. police and military training and support continues.
That's why we need strong collective action to end U.S. complicity in state repression and human rights abuses in Central America (Read more below)
Call on your Senator to support an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) introduced by Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) that would withhold U.S. military training and equipment for security forces in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. Please make a call or send an email today!
