Labor Movement, Social Movement, and FMLN planning May 1st March against CAFTA
Social movement organizations, unions, and the FMLN are calling the Salvadoran population to participate in the traditional May Day march next Monday. Salvadoran conservative media and ARENA government officials immediately tried to delegitimize the protest and the FMLN's support for it by attacking the FMLN for supporting social mobilizing and implying that the march would be violent or disorderly. "We support the participation in the May Day marches. It is a world-wide celebration," said FMLN deputy Salvador Sanchez Ceren. Last year's May Day march was historic in size - the biggest since the 1992 Peace Accords - and this year's march promises to bring together thousands of Salvadorans in resistance to CAFTA, labor flexibilization, privatization and in solidarity with their immigrant brothers and sisters in the US.
