Organizations of the Popular Rebellion and Resistance Bloc (BRP), as well as the Movement of Victims of the Regime (MOVIR), marched from Cuscatlán Park to the historic downtown El Salvador on Sunday, January 12, commemorating the 33rd anniversary of the 1992 Peace Accords.

Approximately 180,000 Salvadorans in the U.S. have legal protection under Temporary Protected Status (TPS), which was granted in 2001. Salvadorans with TPS have lived and, in many cases, raised their families here for over 20 years.

On December 28 and 30, the Committee of Families of Political Prisoners and the Politically Persecuted (COFAPPES) gathered at the gates of the La Esperanza and Santa Ana prisons, sending messages of love and solidarity to family members detained as political prisoners.

The Popular Rebellion and Resistance Bloc (BRP) laid out their goals for the upcoming year and analyzed the challenges facing the country in their second National Assembly, held on December 15.

On December 23, El Salvador’s Legislative Assembly voted to overturn the country’s historic 2017 ban on metals mining, representing a major threat to the country’s environment and drinking water supply, according to environmental groups. The vote took place less than a month after Nayib Bukele announced his intention to reverse the ban, following swift committee approval and only two hours of debate in the general assembly.
