Pledge of Protest

If the U.S.backs Draconian laws, increases military funding to El Salvador, intervenes inthe Salvadoran elections, continues to fund and staff the International LawEnforcement Academy, attacks immigrant communities with raids and deportationswithin the U.S., or otherwise significantly escalate its intervention inCentral America, I pledge to join with others to engage in acts of nonviolentcivil disobedience as conscience leads me... I pledge to engage innonviolent action in order to prevent or halt the death and destruction thatsuch U.S. political, economic, and military policies causes the people of CentralAmerica.

Further, knowingthat the Saca administration of El Salvador has the unconditional support fromthe U.S. government, I also pledge to act when the Saca administration backsdeath-squad activities, passes or applies repressive laws that criminalize the Salvadoransocial movement, sends more troops to Iraq, takes steps to privatize publicgoods such as water and healthcare in the name of profit, undermines theelections process, or attacks a popular protest.

I makeconnections between local issues and the international. Military escalation in Colombia and Mexicois not unlike police brutality against communities of color in the United States.Social justice organizers face terrorism charges in the U.S., El Salvador, and other places. Thedisplacement caused by gentrification is not unlike forced emigration due toharsh economic realities created by free trade.

In solidaritywith the social movement of El Salvador, the greater left-ward momentum in Latin America and social justice everywhere,I will participate in a local affinity group, CISPES committee, or other organizationaddressing U.S.intervention and imperialism.

By pledging, I place myself on "active alert,"poised to hold peaceful vigils, protests, actions, respond to Action Alerts, andto call U.S.government officials as repression and intervention occurs.

I pledge to (please check what you will commit to):

-Call on the Bushadministration and Congress (lobbying, letter writing, phone calling)

-Engage inpeaceful witness and action (vigils, marches, demonstrations, etc.)

-Actively organizewith CISPES in my area
