Ask your Rep to Speak Out: 10 Years Since the Coup in Honduras!

To find out if your Representative is already a co-sponsor of H.R. 1945, the Berta Caceres Human Rights in Honduras Act, check the official list here.

To call their office, use the capitol switchboard and give your ZIP code to be connected: (202) 224-3121. When you reach the office, ask for whomever handles foreign policy.

If your Rep is a co-sponsor, use the following sample script:

My name is [YOUR NAME] and I am calling from [YOUR CITY/TOWN]. I wanted to thank your office for being outspoken on human rights in Central America and for your leadership as an initial cosponsor of HR 1945, the Berta Cáceres Human Rights in Honduras Act.

This Friday, June 28, marks 10 years since the coup and unfortunately, the repression is only getting worse. The government of Honduras has been violently attacking teachers, students, doctors and nurses who have been in the streets defending public education and healthcare – killing at least 3 and wounding many more - so this is an urgent moment to call for an immediate suspension of security aid to Honduras.

Would Representative [SO-AND-SO] join other co-sponsors in making a statement on the House floor on Thursday in support of the Berta Cáceres Human Rights in Honduras Act or putting out a statement on social media?

If yes, to any of the above, please get their contact information and send them the following email to follow up and copy Elise Roberts from the Witness for Peace Solidarity Collective ([email protected]) who can follow-up with details.

If your Rep is not a co-sponsor, use the following sample script:

My name is [YOUR NAME] and I am calling from [YOUR CITY/TOWN]. I am calling about the current human rights crisis in Honduras that the United States government is helping to fuel.

This Friday, June 28, marks 10 years since the coup and unfortunately, the repression is only getting worse. The government of Honduras has been violently attacking teachers, students, doctors and nurses who have been in the streets defending public education and healthcare – killing at least 3 and wounding many more. Earlier this week, the military opened fire on students at the National University of Honduras.

These human rights abuses are being paid for with our tax dollars. The only way to send a message to this violent regime in Honduras is to suspend U.S. police and military aid immediately until the abuses stop.

Representative Hank Johnson has introduced a bill, HR 1945, the Berta Cáceres Human Rights in Honduras Act, which would do exactly that. Will Representative [SO-AND-SO] sign on as a show of commitment to human rights in Central America?
