Solidarity Cyclers Finish Line Potluck

Monday May 26th, 6pm

4028 Arkansas Ave NW, between 14th & 16th near the intersection with Taylor St. NW (closest metro stops: Columbia Heights or Georgia Ave/Petworth on the green line, Buses: S2, S4 on 16th st. or 52, 53, 54 on 14th st.)

May 24-26, 15-20 fearless cyclers will set out to slay down the empire, and to raise money for two social justice organizations!  How, you might wonder?  By riding their bicycles for 160 miles from Columbia Heights to the suburban wilds of Virginia and Maryland, and back! (OK, we know it takes more than a bike ride and fundraising to slay the empire, but it sounds so much cooler that way, no?) The cyclers will finish their ride at this potluck, cross the finish line to chow down on delicious food and give a report on the situation in El Salvador and Haiti.  We will be raising money for CISPES (http://cispes.org) and Haiti Reborn program of the Quixote Center (http://haiti.quixote.org)

Come help welcome them home with a potluck and good cheer!  The bikers will arrive tired and hungry after a 60-mile ride that day, so please bring a dish to share with them and other friends.

Please consult the list below to figure out what you should bring:

If your first name starts with A-F: drinks or dessert
If your first name starts with G-L: main dish
If your first name starts with M-R: side dish
If your first name starts with S-Z: main dish

Benefitting CISPES and the Indian Workers Congress Hunger Strikers

Friday May 30th, 6-9pm, Saint Stephens Church auditorium

1525 Newton St. NW at corner of 16th st.

Suggested donation of $10 at the door, but no one will be turned away.

This event will look at how U.S. employers take advantage of immigrant communities in different ways, but for the same goal of lower wages and higher profits. We will watch a few short videos, one from the Salvadoran movement and one from the Indian Workers' Congress, about why people come to the U.S. for work, and what they face when they arrive. We will also hear from folks who are working for justice in each community.
