Some criteria for a new US ambassador to El Salvador

  • Thenew Ambassador must have an attitude of respect towards the Salvadoranpeople and acknowledge Salvadoran self-determination and autonomy.  He or she should refrain from theperpetuation of paternalistic relations between the U.S. and ElSalvador. 

 

  • Thenew Ambassador should be someone who can conduct business with fulltransparency and honesty.  He or sheshould have at least an intermediate level of Spanish.

 

  • Consideringthe violent history of the country it would be inappropriate to placesomeone in this post who has military training background, any involvementor ties to the CIA (or other espionage bodies), or any record of humanrights violations.   

 

  • Thenew Ambassador should be someone prepared to facilitate and improverelationships between communities and civil society groups as opposed tofocusing primarily around issues of trade and police/military training.

 

  • Thenew Ambassador should be open to working with all political parties aswell as all sectors of Salvadoran society, not just the traditionalbusiness sector and its political allies.

 

  • Giventhe vast importance of the Salvadoran immigrant community in the US, thenew ambassador should be prepared to work in support of immigrant rights,as well as work to facilitate travel and cultural exchange between the USand El Salvador.

 

 

 

Criterio para el nuevo Embajador o la nuevaEmbajadora a El Salvador

 

·       El nuevo embajador o la nueva embajadora tendrá que tener una actitudde respeto hacia el pueblo Salvadoreño y reconocer la autonomía y determinaciónpropia de El Salvador.  El o ella nodebería mantener una relación paternalista que existe entre EE.UU. y ElSalvador.

 

·       El nuevo embajador debería ser alguien quien puede conducir negocioscon una transparencia completa y honestidad. El o ella debería por lo menos tener un nivel de Español intermediario.

 

·       Considerando la historia violenta del país seria inapropiado si lapersona que ocuparía esta posición tendría un antecedente de entrenamiento militar,cualquier tipo de involucramiento o lazos a la CIA (o otros cuerpos deespionaje), o un record de violaciones de derechos humanos.

 

·       El nuevo embajador debería ser alguien preparado para facilitar ymejorar la relaciones entre comunidades y grupos de la sociedad civil paraenfocarse primeramente en temas de pólizas de libre comercio y el entrenamientode la policía y el ejercito.

 

·       El nuevo embajador debería ser abierto a trabajar con todos lospartidos políticos al igual que todos los sectores de la sociedad Salvadoreña,no solo el sector de negocios tradicional y sus aleados.

 

·       Dada la importancia de la comunidad inmigrante Salvadoreña en losEE.UU., el nuevo embajador debería estar preparado para trabajar en favor delos derechos de los inmigrantes, como trabajar para facilitar intercambiosculturales y geográficos entre los EE.UU. y El Salvador.
