A coalition of non-profit organizations in El Salvador are calling for the National Legislative Assembly to terminate Attorney General Luis Martínez, citing failures to fully prosecute former president Francisco Flores for corruption.

On Monday, December 15, the Foundation for Studies for the Application of the Law (FESPAD), the Radios and Participatory Programs Association of El Salvador (ARPAS) and other groups delivered a petition to lawmakers demanding that Martínez be called before the legislative commission investigating the misappropriation of over $15 million in donations from the Taiwanese government to El Salvador during the Flores administration (1999-2004).

The organizations are calling on Martínez to explain his refusal to follow the legislative commission's recommendations that the Attorney General add money laundering to the charges Flores already faces. Attorney General Martínez, who was once Flores’ lawyer, has also come under fire for declining to appeal the recent decision by the judge overseeing Flores’ case to order the former president back under house arrest after public outcry had forced Flores behind bars.

ARPAS Director Leonel Herrera told the media Monday that, while Martínez’s constitutional mandate is to defend society’s interests, “he is not fulfilling said task; therefore, the Legislative Assembly should fire him and name in his place a person who is honest, capable and committed to the fight against corruption.”
