The social movement in El Salvador is calling for international accompaniment during the 2019 presidential elections!

Join CISPES’ delegation to learn directly from grassroots organizers about the major advances made by the social movement and the governing leftist party, the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN), and what’s at stake in the upcoming elections.

Interest is high and spaces are limited. If interested, please apply or contact us as soon as possible.

Background:

Following legislative elections in March 2018, a right-wing super majority in the legislature has moved quickly to turn back the tide on progressive policies and major advances implemented under two successive FMLN administrations. In response, social movement activists have taken to the streets to halt the right-wing plan to privatize water, continue demanding the decriminalization of abortion, denounce massive public-sector firings at the legislative and municipal levels, hold former right-wing officials accountable for decades of corruption, embezzlement and human rights abuses, and much more.

The FMLN is facing a trying moment in its history – and a well-funded, internationally-coordinated destabilization campaign is working towards undermining popular support for the government by defunding social programs and painting the government as corrupt.

The United States government has a long and sordid history of intervening in other countries’ elections to prevent progressive and leftist victories – and El Salvador is no exception. Members of Congress and the Trump Administration have already shown their willingness to smear and threaten to retaliate against the FMLN so it is urgent that people in the U.S. remain vigilant and ready take action to prevent any kind of intervention in the election.

The 2019 elections will be extremely important, not only for the left in El Salvador but also for the region as a whole. As war-mongers in the United States and their counterparts in Latin America attempt to entrench the region in yet another era of militarization and corporate exploitation, international solidarity is vital.

Learn from grassroots organizers in El Salvador about their vision for the future and serve as an International Observer to help ensure a free and fair election!
