The clock is ticking down to a critical election in El Salvador! On March 11^th, Salvadorans will head to the polls to elect their mayors and legislative representatives for the first time since the FMLN's historic victory in 2009. Polls show that the FMLN is set to make important gains, so you can bet that the elite are scrambling to find new ways to throw these elections and halt the important economic and political advances that the popular movement is making.

There is a lot on the line! Will the FMLN make the gains they need to ensure that every child can continue to go to school, regardless of whether they can pay for a uniform, and that El Salvador's 1% start paying their taxes? Or will the right-wing (and their friends in the US) intervene to turn back the clock? One thing we do know for sure is that CISPES will be there. Our election observation delegation heads to El Salvador this week– and we will be watching until the last ballot is counted! In the days leading up to every recent Salvadoran election, Republicans in the US Congress have gone on the attack, making threats against El Salvador to deter an FMLN victory. Our allies in the social movement and the FMLN have denounced the US' behind-the-scenes role in a recent cabinet shakeup, in which nearly every FMLN member of the public security cabinet was removed. But that's not all. The highest-ranking officials, the Minister of Public Security and the Director of the National Civilian Police, were replaced by former military officers who were trained in the US at the infamous School of the Americas.
