Elections Monitoring Delegation 2015
On March 1, 2015, Salvadorans will head to the polls to elect their mayors and legislators. The outcome of this election will determine the FMLN government’s ability to implement policies to address the historical inequality and social exclusion that drive nearly 300 Salvadorans to leave their home for the United States every day. Social programs focused on healthcare, education, women’s empowerment, food security and public sector employment begun under the first FMLN administration of Mauricio Funes (2009-2014) have begun to create the conditions under which migration can be “an option, not an obligation.” Join CISPES in El Salvador from February 21 – March 4 to witness these alternatives first hand!
The 2014 presidential elections which elected Salvador Sánchez Cerén, the first popular movement leader to be elected president of El Salvador, were considered the cleanest and most transparent in El Salvador’s history. However, immediately following the elections, the conservative Supreme Court unseated the electoral authority that oversaw them.
The Salvadoran social movement and the FMLN are calling for international vigilance to ensure that the right-wing elite can’t undermine El Salvador’s democratic institutions on March 1st. Respond to the call for international observers to support free and fair elections in 2015 and ensure that the country’s process of democratization continues to advance.
Dates: February 21 – March 4, 2015 Cost: $900 + airfare No Spanish language skills necessary (translation provided) Observers who join CISPES’ 2015 Elections Observation Delegation will:
- Visit government programs working to change the conditions that force people to migrate
- Meet with electoral officials, FMLN members and social movement leaders to gain a rich understanding of the electoral and political context
- Receive official observer credentials & observer training in-country
- Monitor pre-elections events and observe polling places from set up to closing on Election Day, March 1
- Present conclusions on the electoral process in a press conference and official observer report
